Decode Politics: 5 reasons why Congress lost the plot to BJP in Haryana

As the BJP heads to its third straight term in Haryana proving exit polls wrong, the words of Prime Minister Narendra Modi seem to be turning true.

As the results show the BJP retaining power in a state where it was said to have faced massive anti-incumbency, farmers’ wrath and wrestlers’ protests, here is a look at what the Congress did wrong.

Political Pulse | Haryana may be slipping away, what went wrong for Congress?

The Congress that was confident of returning to power in Haryana by ousting the BJP government after a decade was on the edge Tuesday as the BJP crossed the halfway mark in early trends, upsetting the grand old party’s calculations.

Though Congress leaders argued it was too early to count it out as only one-third of the votes had been counted, it was far from the sweep they had expected.

The trends signal a major setback to the Congress which was rejoicing at its performance in Haryana in the Lok Sabha elections — it won five of the 10 Lok Sabha seats — and was massively confident of wresting the state from the BJP.

Explained | Haryana: An electoral history

Given its small size, Haryana, which was carved out of undivided Punjab on November 1, 1966, has had a disproportionately large impact on Indian national politics.

For almost 53 of the last 58 years, the state has been ruled by five leaders (and their families) — Bansi Lal, Devi Lal, Bhajan Lal, Bhupinder Singh Hooda, and Manohar Lal.

Haryana is where the expression Aaya Ram, Gaya Ram, a uniquely apt descriptor in Indian politics, was born; it is also perhaps the only state where a Governor was once allegedly manhandled by a claimant to the CM’s post.

Explained | Why Haryana election results will be a verdict on Congress’ caste calculus

The contest in Haryana seems to be going differently from what the exit polls predicted. The BJP has maintained a significant lead since the counting of EVMs began, and continues to lead on 49 seats for the last 4 hours of counting. Exit polls had predicted a majority for Congress.

Should the BJP manage a historic third straight win in Haryana, it will be a vindication of its tried and tested electoral arithmetic — consolidating all non-Jat votes. Jats are a significant voting bloc in Haryana, and the Congress was banking heavily on their support.

ECI Election Results Live: 'EC data lagging behind,' alleges Cong's Pawan Khera

Amid the counting of votes for the Haryana Assembly elections on Tuesday, Congress leader Pawan Khera said: “There is a mismatch in the actual number of rounds counted and the number of rounds being shown on the television through the Election Commission data. The EC data is lagging behind."

"They are still showing the 4th or the 5th round data while 11 rounds have been counted. Our General Secretary Communications has tweeted to the Election Commission asking as to why they are trying to put pressure on the local administration by delaying the display and uploading of data. In Jammu and Kashmir, you are getting live data with every round counted but in Haryana, it is not so," Khera added.

Express Opinion | The Haryana election and Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh

With the election season returning to north India, the controversial self-styled godman, Gurmeet Ram Rahim, was once again out on parole, sparking fresh debates about ties between religious leaders and the country’s political structures.

While figures like Ram Rahim and organisations like Dera Sacha Sauda dominate headlines, there is little understanding of the broader, localised culture of religious leaders operating in India’s villages.

In contrast to the grand scale of leaders like Ram Rahim, our research across Punjab reveals a vast network of smaller, lesser-known spiritual leaders and deras influencing thousands of villages. These local institutions, though less visible in the media, significantly shape the lives of the communities they serve.
