Gunfights at several places in Imphal East

Police said the first incident occurred at Thamnapokpi village and Uyok Ching, in Imphal East and Kangpokpi districts, respectively, under the jurisdiction of Yaingangpokpi police station.

As per the complaint, the jewellery owner and his employee were at the store around 3.30 pm when the two unidentified men reached there.

Fresh gunfights erupted on Christmas Eve at several places in Imphal East district.

Police said the first incident occurred at Thamnapokpi village and Uyok Ching, in Imphal East and Kangpokpi districts, respectively, under the jurisdiction of Yaingangpokpi police station. Heavy exchange of fire along with shelling of bombs was reported between armed miscreants since 10:30 pm Tuesday.

In the second incident, gunfire erupted on Wednesday at Sinam village under the jurisdiction of Sagolmang Police Station.

The two incidents could have resulted from provocative firing, said a senior police officer. However, which groups are involved in the firing remains unclear, he added.
