The income of the state government from Value Added Tax (VAT)/Sales tax has been on a steady rise since the last three years, however, the dues worth a phenomenal Rs 17,600 crore is yet to be collected by the state, the Gujarat Assembly was informed on Wednesday.
The state government collected VAT/sales tax dues worth over Rs 41,800 crore in 2012-13. This income increased to Rs 44,200 crore in 2013-14 and in the current fiscal it stands at over Rs 31,100 crore (till December 2014), the state government stated in a written reply to an unstarred question asked by Congress MLA Sailesh Parmar in the House.
The districts of Ahmedabad, Jamnagar and Bharuch contributes the highest quantum of these taxes to the state government coffers.
However, the government is yet to collect VAT/Sales tax dues worth Rs 17,618 crore from the state (as on December 1, 2014). Vadodara (4265 cr), Ahmedabad (Rs 3354 cr) and Bhavnagar (Rs 1403 cr) are the top three districts that have the maximum amount of dues. Even Surat and Kutch districts have dues of over Rs 1000 crore.
The state government earned Rs 4600 crore of VAT on diesel, Rs 2000 cr on petrol, Rs 1300 cr on PNG, Rs 300 cr on CNG, Rs 100 cr on fertilizers and Rs 85 cr on castor seeds (between July 2013 and June 2014), the government stated in a written reply to another question posed by Congress MLA Balwantsinh Rajput.
