The Navsari district administration has denied permission to the Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS) plan to take out a ‘reverse Dandi yatra’ leading to a confrontational situation, with the Patidar leaders determined to take out the rally. At least two other rallies, by Koli Patels (Pratikar rally) and Anamat Bachao Samiti have threatened to challenge PAAS.
The Navsari district authorities have called in paramilitary forces and will ban mobile internet services from Saturday midnight to contain rumours. PAAS convenor Hardik Patel is due to lead the march from Dandi to Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad covering 241 km, with some 70 people, to match the number of marchers that Gandhi started out with in the original Dandi march in 1930, with 79 people. PAAS is demanding OBC status for Patidars to benefit from their quota.
PAAS has threatened to “break the law like Gandhi did” if their peaceful march was not granted permission and carry out the march and garner support along the way. The rally was earlier due for September 6 but was not granted permission.
