The FIR registered by the Manipur police against personnel of the Assam Rifles, accusing them of obstructing Bishnupur police personnel during violence that rocked the town of Kwakta on August 6, will have no impact on ground operations being carried out by the force, defence sources told The Indian Express on Wednesday.
“The message to the troops from the Army’s top hierarchy after the FIR was lodged was that as always, the force will continue to be fair and fear none. The FIR is being discussed at appropriate levels and will have no impact on ground operations,” a source said.
It is learnt that the troops at the incident site have the legal cover.
In a statement issued after the lodging of the FIR, the Army hit back at the Manipur Police stating that some inimical elements have made desperate, repeated and failed attempts to question the role, intent and integrity of the Central Security Forces, especially Assam Rifles, “working relentlessly towards saving lives and restoration of peace in Manipur from 3 May onwards.”
“It needs to be understood that due to the complex nature of the situation on the ground in Manipur, occasional differences at tactical level do occur between various security forces,” it said, adding that all such misunderstandings at the functional level, however, are immediately addressed through the joint mechanism. It said two instances have emerged over the past 24 hours to malignAssam Rifles.
Officials said that disinformation has emerged as a major threat in fuelling the ongoing ethnic violence in the state and all efforts are on to bust such cases immediately.
“We have been promptly debunking all such cases whenever they come to our notice,” an official said.
