The National Green Tribunal’s (NGT) principal bench has directed all the states and union territories, except those in the National Capital Region, to fill vacant posts in state pollution control boards (SPCBs) and pollution control committees (PCC) by the end of April 2025.

The Tribunal also directed the SPCB’s and PCCs to provide adequate infrastructure to labs to make them fully functional. States falling in the National Capital Region have been left out of the NGT order as the Supreme Court is also hearing a case on the issue and had passed directions in the matter a fortnight ago.

The NGT passed the order on Wednesday in a suo motu case on the functioning of state pollution panels across the country, their resource issues and large number of vacancies.

“…we hereby direct that the State/UT not covered by the order of the Hon’ble Supreme Court dated 27.08.2024 will also fill up the posts lying vacant in the SPCBs/PCCs latest by 30.04.2025. All the possible efforts will also be made within this period to provide adequate infrastructure in the laboratories of the PCBs/PCCs and to make them fully functional,” the NGT order stated.
