Fake TTE detained at railway station in Tripura, claims he’s a victim of online fraud

Police say no FIR has been registered in connection with the incident at the Manu railway station in Tripura’s Dhalai district.

A man was detained at Tripura’s Manu railway station on Wednesday for allegedly posing as a travelling ticket examiner and collecting “fines” from ticketless passengers.

The police identified him as Hossain Ali, a resident of Kailashahar in Unakoti district.

However, Ali claimed to have been duped by an online group into believing that he had been hired for the job of a TTE. “They (members of the online group) messaged me on Instagram about providing a central government job. I thought  it’s a central government job and I could earn a good amount of money. They gave me a link to fill the application form. Later, they informed me that I had been selected. They even sent me a uniform, a diary, and even an ID card,” he told the police.

Ali added that he had been asked to collect Rs 150 and Rs 200 as fines from long-distance passengers travelling on trains without tickets.

An officer from the police headquarters said Ali had been handed over to the Railway Protection Force at Dharmanagar in North Tripura district. “No case has been lodged with the Tripura police yet,” the officer added.
