Ex-US envoy Taranjit Singh Sandhu is expert at Explained.Live today

US President Donald Trump’s return to the White House has triggered both anticipation and apprehension. There is nervousness in some world capitals about his often unconventional decision-making.

The retired diplomat is one of the most well-regarded Indian envoys to the US — he served in the post from February 2020 to January 2024 — and knows Washington DC’s politics better than many.

He will be in conversation with Shubhajit Roy, Diplomatic Editor, The Indian Express.

Sandhu was Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy of India in Washington DC from July 2013 to January 2017.

From 1997 to 2000, he was First Secretary (Political) at the Embassy of India in Washington DC, responsible for liaison with the US Congress.

He also served at the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations, New York, from July 2005 to February 2009.
