The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has established a new rule effective August 1, 2025. Under this new legislation, a new UAN (Universal Account Number) can only be generated using Aadhaar-based Face Authentication Technology (FAT) in the UMANG app.
The most notable aspect of the rule is that it eliminates the need for any contact with the employer, ensuring an error-free process for UAN allotment and generation.
The detailed User Manual for allotment and activation of UAN through UMANG APP using FAT is enclosed for your ready reference. @socialepfo @epfochennaizo #pradhanmantriviksitbharatrozgaryojana #EmploymentGeneration #EPFOwithyou pic.twitter.com/Xn4AQE49P6

“However, the existing process of generation of UAN through the employer will continue in respect of exceptional cases like international workers and citizens of Nepal and Bhutan,” according to the statement.
The procedure of creating and activating a new UAN has been entirely digitalised. One has to simply download the UMANG and Aadhaar Face RD apps on their smartphone.
To update EPFO (Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation) records through biometric (face) verification, follow the steps below:
Step 1: Launch the UMANG application and navigate to the option titled “Face Authentication of Already Activated UANs.”
Step 2: Select the consent checkbox and proceed by tapping on the “Face Authentication” button. If the Aadhaar Face RD (Registered Device) application is not already installed, follow the prompt to download and install it.
Step 3: The system will initiate a facial scan using the UIDAI (Unique Identification Authority of India) API.
Step 4: The system will automatically fetch the following linked information:
Step 5: Once authentication is successful, the EPFO database will be updated with the verified credentials.
However, if issues persist or the process cannot be completed, one can contact the UMANG Helpdesk available within the mobile application. Alternatively, they can reach out to EPFO Customer Support for further assistance.
