The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has established a new rule effective August 1, 2025. Under this new legislation, a new UAN (Universal Account Number) can only be generated using Aadhaar-based Face Authentication Technology (FAT) in the UMANG app.

The most notable aspect of the rule is that it eliminates the need for any contact with the employer, ensuring an error-free process for UAN allotment and generation.

However, the existing process of generation of UAN through the employer will continue in respect of exceptional cases like international workers and citizens of Nepal and Bhutan,” according to the statement.
