As campaigning ends in West Tripura, EC has got 65 complaints of poll code violations

According to the Election Commission, illegal drugs, alcohol and cash worth Rs 26.24 crore had been seized in Tripura since the model code of conduct took effect.

As campaigning for the Lok Sabha polls in West Tripura and many other constituencies that will vote on April 19 ended on Wednesday, officials in Tripura said the Election Commission resolved 63 of the 65 complaints of model code of conduct violations it had received.

Illegal drugs, alcohol and cash worth Rs 26.24 crore were seized in raids and at checkpoints set up at different places of the state since March 16, when the elections were announced.

Nine candidates each are in the fray in West Tripura and East Tripura, with the latter constituency going to the polls in the second phase, on April 26.

The BJP won the state’s both Lok Sabha seats in 2019 as its candidates Pratima Bhoumik polled 51.77 per cent of votes in West Tripura and Rebati Tripura 46.12 per cent of votes in East Tripura. Rebati had switched over to the saffron party from the CPM.

The main fight in West Tripura is between former chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb of the BJP and state Congress president Ashish Kumar Saha.

As per the Election Commission, there are 14,63,526 voters—7,34,133 men, 7,29,337 women and 56 transgender voters—across 1,686 polling centres in West Tripura.

The commission has deployed 84 companies of central armed police forces comprising 20,000 personnel in addition to 10,000 Tripura State Rifles personnel and a few thousand personnel of the state police for the poll process.

A police officer said that 856-km border with Bangladesh was fully sealed.
