Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) declared results for Class X and XII on May 24 and May 28 and threw in a few surprises for everyone while keeping some traditions going. For one,girls out-performed boys in both classes just as in previous years by a fairly large margin. While,government schools showed better results than independent schools,toppers came from unexpected corners of the country as a CBSE official remarked. Since the the Board results are now out,colleges will soon be releasing cut-offs for various courses as principals take marks into consideration before announcing cut-offs. For Class X results,Delhi region continues to remain second- last in the tally as declared by the CBSE even as the overall performance has increased by two percentage points. Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas in the Capital have came up with a 100 per cent victory,with all its students qualifying for higher classes. Approximately 11.8 lakh students (regular and private) took the exam this year out of which 68,431 students have secured a cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 10. Of this,50.2 per cent are girls. More than two lakh students have scored a CGPA between 9.0 and 10. There is a two percentage points improvement in the overall performance of students across all regions with girls outperforming boys yet again. 98.48 per cent of the girls who took the exam qualified for higher classes while boys trailed by .5 per cent. For Class XII,Delhi ranked second with a pass percentage of 85.40 per cent after Chennai. 75.80 per cent of the boys who appeared in the exams cleared it. Girls girls fared much better with a pass percentage of 86.21 per cent. In the Delhi region,2,28,466 students took the exam from 1,475 schools and were evaluated in 181 papers and 1,95101 have passed the exam. Students at the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas in the capital have recorded a 100 per cent pass percentage in Class X. Central schools in Delhi recorded the best performance in Class XII results with a pass percentage of 95.53 in Kendriya Vidyalayas and 91.20 at the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas. The JNVs have gone down by approximately 5 percentage points while KVs by 0.10 percent from the last years results. TOPPERS The all-India topper is Mohammad Ismat from Lilong,Manipur,who scored 99 percent in the science stream. Navya Singla,from Chandigarh topped the commerce stream in the country scoring 98 per cent. Aastha Sethi from Vadodara topped humanities with the same percentage. Anant Srinivas Subramanian from Delhi Private School,Sharjah,topped Delhi region amongst the overseas students with a score of 491/ 500 while Kshitij Jain from Delhi Public School RK Puram topped the Delhi region (local) in the science stream with an aggregate of 98 per cent. Aastha Sethi recorded the best performance in Arts also scoring 98 per cent marks. Kshitij got the 402nd rank in IIT-JEE. He wants to pursue a Bachelors degree in computer engineering from IIT-Delhi. Explaining his reaction to the results,Kshitij says,I was shocked. I did not expect to get such high marks. He did not follow a fixed schedule for the exams and concentrated on one topic at a time and built his confidence with every topic. Himanshi Khatri from St Michaels school,Pusa Road,was the commerce stream topper from Delhi with 97.8 per cent. She says she never had a fixed strategy for studies. My routine varied on a daily basis she said. Riya Sharma from Springdales School,Pusa Road,who topped humanities with 97.6 per cent was surprised with her performance and said the feeling was yet to sink in. I was expecting more than 90 per cent but not two 100s,definitely not in political science. As many as 987 students will receive merit certificates from CBSE for scoring 100 per cent marks in mathematics,which is a drop from last years 1,448. 546 in Economics,580 in Physics,and 844 students in Business studies will also receive merit certificates based on subject specific cut-offs. Overall,more than 8,000 students will receive merit certificates. SPECIAL STUDENTS Of the more than 1,800 students who took the exam in the specially-abled category,86.34 per cent cleared it with at least 46 securing more than 90 per cent marks. Newsline spoke to Ambika Khattar who topped DPS,RK Puram,with 83.8% in humanities. She is 100 per cent visually challenged but she has eyes set on the college of her dreams. Ambika wants to pursue history (hons) from St Stephens College at Delhi University. I am really very happy. I was expecting to be the topper as I also topped in Class X. My efforts have finally paid off. I am very grateful to my parents and my teachers who were also by my side whenever I need help, she said. She uses a special talking software called JAWS for her studies. I used to upload NCERT e-books and extra notes which the software picks and make it audiblesaid her mother,Neelam Khattar . Ambrika is secretary of the culture club at DPS RK Puram. She was also among top 10 students selected in a junior radio jockey hunt.
