The Election Commission on Thursday allowed Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) to accept voluntary contributions, subject to the outcome of the Supreme Court in the dispute between the Eknath Shinde group and the Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray group over control of the Shiv Sena name and symbol.

Responding to a request by Shiv Sena (UBT) on July 10, the EC wrote to Thackeray Thursday authorising it to collect voluntary donations, as per Section 29B and 29C of the Representation of the People Act, 1951 that govern the contributions to political parties.

The EC said this was allowed subject to the outcome of the Supreme Court order and in the interim, the party was asked to submit a report of all contributions of over Rs 20,000, which all parties are required to submit to the EC annually.

With the Maharashtra Assembly elections slated later this year, the NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) had requested EC for authorisation to accept contributions. The EC had allowed NCP (SCP) to accept contributions on July 8 until the Supreme Court decides on the dispute matter between Sharad Pawar and Ajit Pawar.

The Shiv Sena had split into two factions in 2022. The EC in 2023 decided the dispute in favour of the group led by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. In the case of the NCP, the party split in 2023, and the EC decided that the real NCP was represented by the Ajit Pawar group.
