VICE-PRESIDENT Venkaiah Naidu said on Thursday that while he doesn’t like dynasties, he appreciated the dynasty of the Bajaj family for the work it had done in the service sector and asked the group to carry on.

Naidu was in Mumbai to give away the 41st Jamnalal Bajaj Foundation awards. Governor Ch Vidyasagar Rao, Minister for Education Vinod Tawde and Rahul Bajaj, chairman of the Board of Trustees of Jamnalal Bajaj Foundation, were present at the function.

“This is the third generation of Bajaj family that has been carrying forward the legacy of Jamnalal Bajaj. This is a real dynasty… that is what is required. I don’t like dynasties. I don’t encourage dynasties. Loktantra main dynasty nasty hai aisa log kahate hain. Rahulji aapka parivaar ye dynasty continue kare iskeliye aap ka abhinandan. Aage bhi aise karate rahiye (People say dynasty is nasty in democracy. Rahulji, you continue the dynasty of your family and I congratulate you for that. Do continue your work),” said Naidu.

Maintaining that gender discrimination should be eliminated, Naidu said: “Women empowerment is important. They should get opportunities in all sectors.” He urged the gathering to not forget five things — parents, birthplace, mother tongue, motherland and Guru. “We have to think of value addition and have to protect our languages,” he added.

The Jamnalal Bajaj awards are given annually to honour the contribution of individuals who work towards serving the people, their community and nation. While the award for outstanding contribution in the field of constructive work went to Dhoom Singh Negi from Uttarakhand, the award for application of science and technology for rural development was given to Rupal Desai and Rajendra Desai from Gujarat.

The award for development and welfare of women and children was given to Prasanna Bhandari from Rajasthan. Besides, the international award for promoting Gandhian values outside India went to Dr Clayborne Carson from the US.

“It is always a moment of pride for us to honour such individuals who have relentlessly worked towards making the world a better place. These individuals are shining examples of working selflessly and they reiterate the philosophy of Gandhian principles. They truly represent the ethos and fundamentals of the Gandhian way of life,” said Rahul Bajaj.
