A government doctor has been arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting girls over several months at a primary school hostel in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruchirappalli district.

The accused, identified as Dr Samson (31), a physician at a government healthcare facility, was arrested Tuesday under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. According to police, he would visit the hostel for consultations and allegedly use these opportunities to sexually assault the children.

The allegations came to light after a distress call was made to the Child Helpline. After this, the District Child Protection Officer, along with other officials, conducted interviews with the students and came to know about the incidents.

A complaint was then lodged with an all-women police station.

“Samson, who began his government service in 2021 after completing his medical degree from Puducherry in 2017, had been stationed in Thoothukudi before his transfer to Tiruchirappalli. Samson’s mother is the principal of a government-aided primary school. It was at this school, where students from class 1 to 5 reside in the hostel, that Samson allegedly abused his position to visit and harass the students under the guise of providing medical care,” a senior officer familiar with the investigation told The Indian Express.

Following his arrest, Samson was remanded to judicial custody for three days by a women’s court.
