Four days after riots broke out in Chhattisgarh’s Balodabazar, the state’s Vishnu Deo Sai government Friday suspended its former district collector and ex-superintendent of police for failing to initiate “appropriate action” against last month’s desecration of Jaitkham — a pillar considered sacred by the Satnami Panth sect.
The action against K L Chauhan, an IAS officer of the 2009 batch, and Sadanand Kumar, an IPS officer of the 2010 batch, came after the two were first transferred out of the district and later suspended pending inquiry.
On 10 June, hundreds of people protesting the desecration of Jaitkham in Amar Gufa on 16 May vandalised the Balodabazar district collector’s office and torched vehicles there. The riot also affected the SP office, located on the same premises. The officers were removed as Collector and SP of Balodabazar-Bhatapara respectively, in the wake of the incident.
In a related development, the state government has also constituted a single-member judicial inquiry commission to probe the desecration.
