At a time when the Dehradun police were busy making security arrangements for the President’s visit, a daylight robbery took place at a jewellery showroom on Rajpur Road under the Kotwali Nagar police station area.

According to information provided by the police, armed miscreants took jewellery worth around Rs 10 crore within a few minutes from Reliance Jewels. Five robbers allegedly entered the jewellery showroom posing as customers and took the employees hostage at gunpoint. Preparations were going on to decorate the precious pieces of jewellery in the showroom ahead of Diwali.

The miscreants later locked the employees in the pantry and tied their hands with plastic rope. They allegedly looted diamonds and gold jewellery worth crores of rupees, and escaped before the police could even get any information.

Four separate teams were formed under the leadership of jurisdictional level officers for surveillance, CCTV and information related to the incident and for questioning the witnesses,” said the Dehradun police in a statement.

While collecting information regarding such incidents in the past and the latest status of the gangs that have come to light, the police found similar incidents have occurred in Reliance jewellery showrooms in Odisha, Maharashtra, West Bengal and Delhi.

“In the initial investigation, the police have received important clues regarding the accused involved in the incident. The name of a gang linked to Bihar is coming to light.” the statement added.

Meanwhile, The Opposition Congress questioned Uttarakhand’s law and order situation. Congress spokesperson Shishpal Singh Bisht said the robbery took place in broad daylight a few steps away from the Secretariat, and the police did not even hear about it.
