Cyclone Senyar to cross Indonesia by Wednesday noon, no threat to India

Senyar is the second cyclone to form in the north Indian Ocean basin during the post monsoon season this year.

Cyclone Senyar developed near Strait of Malacca and adjoining northeast Indonesia, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Wednesday.

” The deep depression over Strait of Malacca moved nearly westwards during past 6 hours with a speed of 10 km/hr and intensified into a cyclonic storm Senyar. On Wednesday, it prevailed over the Strait of Malacca and adjoining northeast Indonesia,” the IMD said on Wednesday.

Cyclone Senyar posed no immediate risk to India, the IMD said, as it was located about 600 km east-southeast of Nancowry, Nicobar Islands and 740 km southeast of Car Nicobar. The storm was located close to Indonesia (about 100km from Kuta Makmur) and about 260 km west-southwest of George Town in Malaysia.

According to the IMD, the cyclone will cross Indonesia coast by Wednesday noon and thereafter weaken.

Senyar is the second cyclone to form in the north Indian Ocean basin during the post monsoon season this year. Cyclone Montha had hit Andhra Pradesh coast near Kakinada on October 28.
