In the wake of the flood-like situation caused by Cyclone Fengal, Prime Minister Narendra Modi called Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin today to assess the situation and offer the Centre’s “full support” to the state. Even after making landfall on Saturday and gradually weakening, the cyclone continues to bring heavy rainfall over north coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. Several roads in Nettapakkam, Puducherry, have submerged due to severe flooding, leading to transport disruptions in the area. In response, all schools and colleges in the union territory will remain closed on Tuesday (Dec 3). Furthermore, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued rain alerts in Karnataka, including Bengaluru and Mysuru, and Kerala for Tuesday. What TN has sought from Centre: The Tamil Nadu government said the cyclone has left over 1.5 crore individuals and 69 lakh families grappling with extensive destruction in the state. On Monday, Chief Minister M K Stalin wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking immediate relief of Rs 2,000 crore from the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF) to address the disaster’s fallout. Cyclone Fengal status: The remnant low-pressure area is likely to emerge into the southeast & adjoining east-central Arabian Sea off north Kerala-Karnataka coasts around Dec 3, the IMD said. The IMD attributed Fengal’s extremely slow movement for the exceptionally heavy rainfall over districts of north Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. It continued to maintain intensity even over nine hours after it made landfall, the IMD said.
