Hours after a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel died following an encounter with militants during a search operation in the Kootah area of Kathua district, the Jammu and Kashmir Police on Wednesday killed a second militant hiding in the area.

The slain militant had had managed to flee on Tuesday night after the death of his accomplice. The police and paramilitary forces had then launched a search operation in the Kootah area. The two militants had entered a house in the village last night and asked for water, following which they opened fire and injured a civilian.

On Wednesday morning, during the search operation, the militant had fired at the joint team from the forest area, killing the CRPF personnel. Some of the bullets fired by him also hit the vehicle of Kathua SSP Anayat Ali Choudhary and an escort vehicle of DIG Jammu-Samba-Kathua range Dr Sunil Gupta.

Sources said that searches were in progress in the area to rule out the possibility of any more militants hiding there. Meanwhile, a search has also been initiated in the Ramgarh area following reports about the sighting of two militants there.
