Trinamool leader shot dead in WB

Three bullets hit Paik, who was sleeping, while his wife who was besides him sustained minor injury, police said.

A local Trinamool Congress leader was shot dead by assailants at his Nagartala village home in South 24 Parganas district early today.

Assailants shot Manik Paik (52),president of the party’s Canning II block committee, through the window of his ‘kuchcha’ house at about 2 am.

Three bullets hit Paik, who was sleeping, while his wife who was besides him sustained minor injury, police said.

She said the sound of gunshot woke her up and she saw some people fleeing.

Local Trinamool leaders alleged that CPI(M) was behind the murder while the Left party claimed it was a result of Trinamool’s internal bickering.

Paik,a former CPI(M) panchayat pradhan for two terms, had left the party alleging corruption in it and joined Trinamool Congress when it was formed in 1998,party sources said, adding he became block president two years ago.

Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting C M Jatua and Shyamal Mondal, minister of state for Sundarban Affairs and Irrigation and Waterways, visited Paik’s house.
