Supreme Court said that those burning women to death for dowry should be hanged and no mercy shown to them.

The Supreme Court on Monday said that those burning women to death for dowry should be hanged and no mercy shown to them.

“You have burnt to death a woman by pouring kerosene.

How can you do such a barbaric act? It is an uncivilised act.

You should be hanged for the crime,” a vacation bench of Justices Markandeya Katju and Deepak Verma observed.

The apex court lamented that in India,there has been a spurt in the number of dowry cases in which hapless women are burnt to death by the husband and the in-laws.

“In India hundreds of innocent women are being burnt to death. It is an uncivilised act,How can we do it? We should hang such persons,” the apex court observed.

The apex court passed the observation while refusing to grant bail to Mahender Kumar Gulati,a convict in a bride burning case.

We will not grant you any relief. You can try your luck before another bench,” the apex court told counsel Jasbir Singh Malik.

In this case,the deceased Rajani in her dying declaration had accused her husband Mahender Kumar Gulati,his elder brother Prem Kumar Gulati and the latter’s wife Rajani of constantly harassing her and then setting her ablaze after pouring kerosene over her at their house in Haryana’s Bhiwani district.
