Terror-struck domestic help rescued in Delhi

Fearing beatings from her employers, the girl even refused to recognise mother.

A minor tribal girl, working as a domestic help for last four-years,has been rescued in a joint operation by the police and an NGO from east Delhi’s Geeta Colony today.

17-year-old Payal (name changed) was rescued this morning from a house in M Block,Geeta Colony by police and activists of Bachapan Bachalo Andolan.

“The girl, who had four years ago refused to recognise her mother allegedly due to the terror of her employers, could not stop crying when she met her family today,” BBA said in a statement.

According to Payal’s mother Sukurmuni, the girl was brought here by a local agent Ajay Kumar, who was a resident of her village, about five years ago.

“He brought her to an agency which was running in the name of an NGO ‘Aadivaasi Seva Samiti’ in Shakurpur near Samrat Cinema. The girl, under the garb of placement, was sold by the agency as a domestic help to the family from whose house she was rescued today,” she said.

“Four years ago, when I came to rescue her from her employers house, she was threatened and she even refused to recognise me. I am extremely happy that she is with me today,” the mother added.

Payal alleged that she was not paid any money and her salary used to go to the placement agency.

“I had no freedom of movement and absolutely no contact with my family. Whenever I asked them to let me go to my home, they would say that I can’t go as they don’t have any other maid,” said Payal after she was rescued by police.

Payal’s mother, sister and brother had approached BBA a few days back after running from every pillar to post to get their child back.

BBA then tracked the agency ‘Aadivasi Seva Service’ and found that it had changed its name to ‘Golden Placement Service’ claiming to be a registered one.

Police are further probing the matter and efforts are on to nab the trafficker.

“It seems that the increasing cases of exploitation of domestic helps has not alarmed the authorities enough. Children are the cheapest form of labour. The probability of children leaving employment whenever they want is very low,and they may be exploited, beaten and made to work long hours.

People as well as authorities need to be sensitised about this hidden form of exploitation,” said R S Chaurasia, chairperson,BBA.

Early this month,a 13-year-old maid was rescued from a home in Dwarka after her employers,a doctor couple, left her locked up and starving while they went on a vacation to Thailand.
