Assam molestation: TV journalist quits,3 held

Journalist accused of orchestrating incident resigned 'in the interest of investigation”.

Even as three more persons were arrested for their alleged involvement in the molestation of a teenager outside a Guwahati bar last week,the television journalist accused of orchestrating the incident resigned on Sunday “in the interest of the investigation and morality”.

Confirming the resignation of Gaurav Jyoti Neog,whom RTI activist Akhil Gogoi had accused of orchestrating the incident,Nitumoni Saikia,executive editor of NewsLive,said: “We strongly deny the charges,but in the intervening period Gaurav tendered his resignation in the interest of a free and fair trial.”

Neog,in a statement posted on his Facebook page,said: “As a journalist,I took the footage… It is by dint of those visuals that the culprits have been identified… I became a victim of a big conspiracy.”

RTI activist Akhil Gogoi today met Assam Police Director General Jayanta Narayan Choudhury and handed over some video footage,which,he claimed,contained evidence to prove Neog’s involvement.

Meanwhile,with the arrest of three more persons on Sunday,seven of the 12 accused have been arrested so far. Guwahati City SSP Apurba Jiban Baruah said while two persons were detained from Bhangagarh,where the incident took place,one was arrested in Bijni in Chirang district.
