All India Mahila Congress president Alka Lamba on Tuesday visited Tripura and said it has the second-highest number of crimes against women in the Northeast so that the party would soon start Nari Nyay Padyatra in all districts.
Speaking to reporters at a media briefing at the Pradesh Congress Bhawan in Agartala, she said, “Nari Nyay is among the five major postulates on which Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has been holding the nationwide Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra. BJP speaks about Beti Bachao but in reality, they are saving those who rape, molest and assault our daughters. So, I’m travelling across the country to unite women and build women. I have travelled to 22 states in the last 50 years, including Haryana, Tamil Nadu and Tripura.”
Invoking examples of current and former BJP leaders, elected public representatives like Brij Bhushan Singh, Kuldeep Singh Sengar, Sandeep Singh Sahni, Ramdulari Gaur and others accused in cases of crimes against women, Lamba said, “There is no word on women employment, empowerment and protection apparatus during the last ten years of BJP rule. The Mahila Congress is holding a slew of awareness and sensitisation programmes to unite women. Our objective will be to unite and strengthen the organisation and will hold Nari Nyay Padyatra in every district to reach the homes of people and extend our support for legal fights.”
In an oblique reference to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent comments that 140 crore Indians are his family, the Congress leader said crimes against women have risen in the country since PM Modi’s proverbial ‘Parivar’ are BJP MLAs, MPs, ministers who are accused of rapes, molestations and crimes against women.
Citing a recent case at Kamalpur in Dhalai district, where a magistrate was accused of molestation and sexual harassment of a rape survivor who had purportedly gone to his chamber to record her statement, Lamba said, “Rakshaks have turned into bhalshaks in Tripura. MHA figures say 165 rapes happened in 2020, 152 in 2021 and 140 in 2022. Tripura is unsafe; rapes are increasing. No women from five to 80 years old are safe here.”
She said nearly 400 women were raped in the last two years across the country and demanded fast-track courts, speedy disposal of pending cases and exemplary punishment for culprits.
“BJP’s double engine governments in the Northeast have failed to provide relief. The government is standing with rapists, providing them legal and financial relief,” she said.
