The Congress on Friday slammed the Central government’s move to declare June 25 as ‘Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas’, referring to it as “yet another headline-grabbing exercise in hypocrisy.”
Taking to social media platform X, Congress General Secretary in-charge (Communications) Jairam Ramesh wrote, “Yet another headline grabbing exercise in hypocrisy by the non-biological PM who had imposed an undeclared Emergency for ten long years before the people of India handed him a decisive personal, political, and moral defeat on June 4, 2024 – which will go down in history as Modi Mukti Diwas.”
Ramesh further alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had subjected the Constitution and its principles, values and institutions to “systematic assault.”
“This is a non-biological PM whose ideological parivar had rejected the Constitution of India in Nov 1949 on the grounds that it did not derive inspiration from Manusmriti,” the post further said.
‘Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas’ will commemorate massive contributions of all those who endured inhuman pains of 1975 Emergency, Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced earlier today.
“On 25 June 1975, the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, showing her dictatorial mindset, strangled the soul of Indian democracy by imposing emergency in the country. Lakhs of people were jailed without any reason and the voice of the media was suppressed.” the Home Minister posted on X.
On June 25 this year, India entered the fiftieth year of the imposition of the Emergency, which saw the suspension of civil liberties, curtailment of press freedom, mass arrests, the cancellation of elections, and rule by decree.
