A speeding car ran over five men sleeping on a footpath near an overbridge near Jindal steel plant in Hisar town of Haryana early Wednesday. The deceased were labourers hired to repair the overbridge, locally known as Jindal bridge, and reportedly belonged to Bihar’s Saharsa and Khagaria districts.
The driver of the i20 car lost control and dashed against the divider of the overbridge before breaking the railings. It fell about 70 feet below the overbridge where the five men were sleeping after the day’s work. They were to resume work the next morning.
Hisar police spokesperson Harish Bhardwaj said the repair work was going on the overbridge for the past two days.
The car, which was headed to Hansi, had two other people along the driver. Bhardwaj said the car driver also sustained injuries in the incident. The injured have been admitted to the civil hospital.
“The police is inquiring into the matter,” said Bhardwaj.
