The Supreme Court’s decision to dismiss claims of additional compensation to 1984 Bhopal gas leak victims has restarted a blame game between the ruling BJP and the opposition Congress in Madhya Pradesh.

Accusing the previous Congress government of ineptness, Bhopal Gas Tragedy Relief & Rehabilitation, and Minister of Medical Education, Vishvas Kailash Sarang said they will take the help of special law experts to study the judgment and decide on the future course of action.

Sarang told The Indian Express, “We are continuously working for the victims taking complete care of their treatment including cancer, and providing pension. We even put this petition in court to get them compensation. The Congress government back then did not handle the matter properly in the court.”

Hitting back at the BJP, Congress spokesperson in Madhya Pradesh Piyush Babele said, “They did not appoint good lawyers as they did intend to win the case. The BJP should now give a special package as compensation. There was a petition in SC where Rs 4 lakh compensation was demanded for Covid victims and SC had sought a reply from Modi government but did the Modi government give that compensation?”

Petitioners in the case also expressed dismay over the apex court ruling and pledged to continue their fight for justice.

“We are angry and sad but we shall find a lawful way. Several activists fighting for this cause have passed away but we will continue the fight till our last breath and our future generation will continue this fight after we are gone. Due to a question mark by SC or them rejecting the petition, our struggle will not end in fact we will fight with more vigour,” said 65-year-old activist Balkrishna Namdev, Bhopal Gas Peedit Nirashrit Pensionbhogi Sangarsh Morcha.

“It is an utter disgrace that Union Carbide, a fugitive from justice, responsible for killing and maiming half a million citizens, which regularly avows it’s contempt for India’s courts, has been given servile deference by India’s highest judges, who expressed open disgust at the pleas of its victims, as though they considered it a moral affront to assert the rights of a human being before the interests of a business,” said Rachna Dhingra, who represents Bhopal group for information and action specifically for Bhopal gas victims.
