Two people were trampled to death by wild elephants in Kerala in 24 hours, taking the total number of such deaths in the state so far this year to eight.

The first victim, identified as 45-year-old Manu of Noolpuzha in Wayanad district, was killed while he was walking home Monday night. His body was found in a paddy field Tuesday morning. Later, in a separate incident that took place in Idukki village, 45-year-old Sophia Ismail was attacked by a wild elephant while she was walking from her house in Peruvanthanam village to a nearby stream to take a bath.

The deaths of several people from tribal communities in recent months in such attacks, which have been rare in the past, have raised alarm among those who live in the vicinity of forest areas. Just last month, four tribal persons – two in Malappuram and two in Wayanad – have died in attacks from tigers and elephants.

The government last year declared human-animal conflict a state-specific disaster. On Monday, the Cabinet decided to give compensation of Rs 4 lakh each for victims of snake-bite from the state disaster relief fund.
