Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday took a swipe at Opposition unity efforts, saying that they are not going to succeed. Shah’s statement came in the backdrop of leaders from 18-odd Opposition parties across the country converging in Bihar to draw up a plan to fight the BJP in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.

“There is a photo session going on in Patna with all the Opposition leaders assembling at one platform to send a message that they will challenge Narendra Modi,” Shah said, addressing a public rally at Jammu’s Bhagwati Nagar. “Jitne bhi haath mila lo, apki ekta sambhav nahi (Join hands but your unity is impossible). Even if they unite, the Narendra Modi government is sure to return with more than 300 seats during the 2024 general elections,” he added.

On the occasion, Shah inaugurated development projects worth Rs 43 crore and laid the foundation stone for projects worth Rs 309 crore.

The Jammu rally was held on a day that held special significance for the BJP as party ideologue Syama Prasad Mookerjee had died in a Srinagar jail on June 23, 1953, days after he was arrested at Jammu’s Lakhanpur for entering the then J&K state without a permit.

Shah also took a dig at PDP’s Mehbooba Mufti and National Conference’s Omar Abdullah for questioning the BJP government after an incident of terror. “Madam Mufti and Abdullah Saheb, I want to remind you that during the UPA government’s 10-year rule, there had been 7,327 incidents of terror. In our nine-year period, the number has come down to 2,350 only,” he said, adding that this means that there has been a 70 per cent decrease in incidents of terror.

While 2,056 people had died during UPA’s 10-year rule, only 377 died during the last nine years, Shah said. He also pointed out that in 47 months after the abrogation of Article 370, there have been only 32 calls of hartal, adding that the incidents of stone pelting too have come down by 90 per cent.

Earlier, the youth used to have stones in their hands and now they have books, Shah said.

Referring to the achievements of the UT administration, he said, “We got the industrial policy bringing investments”. One crore 88 lakh tourists visited Jammu and Kashmir in 2022, he said, adding that not even 50 per cent of this used to visit earlier.

Earlier, only people associated with three families used to be visible in the echelons of power but now 35,000 people from the grassroots level are there, Shah said in reference to the three-tier Panchayati Raj system in the UT.

Shah also congratulated UT’s Lt Governor Manoj Sinha and the security forces for the successful G20 meet in Srinagar.
