Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar met Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and party leaders Rahul Gandhi and KC Venugopal in Delhi on Thursday evening as efforts to forge an anti-BJP front ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha polls gather pace.
Following the meeting at Kharge’s residence, Rahul Gandhi said, “the process of uniting opposition has started; this is a beginning, all parties are committed towards forging unity.”

Interestingly, the meeting comes days after Pawar distanced himself from the Congress’s demand of a JPC probe into allegations levelled against the Adani Group by short-selling firm Hindenburg Research. Pawar said he believes the Adani Group is being “targeted” by unknown entities whose motives he questioned. However, he subsequently took a U-turn, saying he would not oppose a JPC for the sake of Opposition unity.
The meeting also comes a day after Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and his deputy Tejashwi Yadav of the Rashtriya Janata Dal met Kharge and Gandhi at the Congress president’s 10, Rajaji Marg residence. The discussions revolved around forging a united front to take on the BJP.
Kharge, meanwhile, said the opposition parties have decided to unite and that they will talk to all parties. All parties should come together to save the country, democracy and ensure freedom of speech, he added.
Sharad Pawar, on his part, said this was a beginning and that discussions will be held with other parties like the TMC to bring them together.
