Goa University on Monday suspended an assistant professor after allegations surfaced that he “leaked” an exam question paper to a student.
Vice Chancellor Harilal B Menon has constituted a fact-finding committee to look into the allegations. The committee has been ordered to submit a report in 48 hours.
Goa Governor P S Sreedharan Pillai, the chancellor of Goa University, has also sought a detailed report. “Raj Bhavan has taken a serious note of the recent issue of ‘question paper leak’ at Goa University and also the different comments made by political parties in this regard,” a Raj Bhavan statement said.
The VC on Monday said allegations of “disclosing exam question papers to a female student” were made against an assistant professor at the university.
The order said the assistant professor has been placed under suspension with effect from March 17 and that he would remain under suspension until further orders pending inquiry.
On Sunday, a group of activists filed a police complaint at the Agacaim police station, alleging that the assistant professor stole the question paper from the cabin of a colleague and leaked it to a female student. The complainants demanded a thorough investigation alleging a “deep-rooted corruption” in the system.
Vice Chancellor Menon told the media, “There is absolutely no complaint that the question paper was leaked. It was only said that someone had entered a (faculty member’s) cabin on a previous evening. And when the Dean questioned (the person), his reply was that ‘I had gone there to take a chemical and…took the chemical and did some analysis’. There was no complaint from any faculty. He wanted to have a chemical to complete the practical of students, so with respect to that, he entered someone’s cabin. The next morning, he submitted an apology, saying, ‘I entered your cabin without your permission’.”
“So, to get to the bottom of this, I have constituted a fact-finding committee. If I find there is some substance (to the allegations), we will do further inquiry and disciplinary action will be taken on the basis of the (fact-finding committee) report,” Menon said.
