As air quality continues to be a growing concern in India, recent Air Quality Index (AQI) bulletin reports by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) reveal varying levels of pollution across the country’s major cities. While northern cities like Delhi, Kolkata, Lucknow, and Patna are experiencing ‘moderate’ air quality, southern cities such as Pune and Hyderabad are seeing significantly cleaner air.
According to the latest Air Quality and Weather Bulletin, these differences highlight the ongoing regional disparities in pollution levels, with some areas showing potential health concerns for sensitive individuals, while others enjoy much safer atmospheric conditions.
According to the latest Air Quality and Weather Bulletin, the air quality in Delhi is deemed “acceptable,” but there may be a moderate health concern for a small number of individuals who are unusually sensitive to pollutants. The Air Quality Index (AQI) in New Delhi currently stands at 165, which falls within the “moderate” range at 10 AM on Thursday. Though the skies are expected to remain clear throughout the day, residents with respiratory sensitivities should take precautions.
The predominant surface winds in Delhi are likely to blow from the Northwest/Southeast at a speed of 7.4 km/h on Thursday.
The cities of Kolkata, Lucknow, and Patna are also experiencing “moderate” air quality levels. Kolkata’s AQI stands at 161, while Lucknow registers a slightly lower AQI of 125. In Patna, the AQI has reached 162. While these levels indicate that the air is not critically harmful, they do signal potential risks for individuals sensitive to air pollution.
In contrast to the northern cities, Pune is witnessing much cleaner air. The current AQI in Pune is 64, falling under the “satisfactory” range at 11 AM. This means that air pollution poses little or no risk to the general population. The weather department forecasts a partly cloudy sky for Pune throughout the day, contributing to the pleasant air quality conditions.
Early this morning, around 5:00 AM, thick dust, smog, and pollution were evident under the streetlights along the Mumbai Eastern Freeway. The weather in Mumbai has been hot and humid today, with minimal wind. AQI stands at 86 in Mumbai
In contrast, Bengaluru and Ahmedabad are experiencing “satisfactory” air quality, with AQI levels at 41 in Bengaluru and 82 in Ahmedabad, at 10-11:30 AM respectively. Weather forecasts indicate that Mumbai will have partly cloudy skies, with a chance of drizzle in the city and surrounding areas. Bengaluru is expected to see generally cloudy conditions, with the possibility of rain or thundershowers, which could further enhance its air quality.
Hyderabad is currently leading in terms of air quality, with an AQI of 49, placing it in the “good” category in the morning hours. This suggests that air pollution poses minimal risks, offering residents a clearer and healthier environment. The city is expected to enjoy clear skies, making it a respite from the pollution levels seen in other urban areas.
