Ahmedabad: Pedestrian-only zones marked, police checkposts to be set up on New Year’s eve

To avoid any untoward incident around the New Year celebrations, the Ahmedabad City Police has made an action plan, including setting up of checkposts, marking pedestrian-only zones and deployment of police teams especially SHE teams for women’s security, among other things.

Further, Ahmedabad City Police Commissioner GS Malik on Monday notified the pedestrian-only zones in the city during the New Year celebrations. The area between Stadium Circle and Panchvati on CG Road will be prohibited for vehicles between 6 pm on December 31, 2024, and 3 am on January 1, 2025, according to the Ahmedabad City Police notification. All parking spots on CG road will be closed at 6 pm.

People can go from Samtheshwar Mahadev to Bodyline Crossroads and only cross CG Road at this point. Another alternate route for vehicles to cross the CG Road is from Girish Cold Drinks towards St Xavier’s College. Between Zazarman crossroads to Taj Skyline on Sindhu Bhavan Road, a pedestrian zone has been marked.

According to the police notification, the vehicles have been allowed to go to the Kalibari Temple from Zazarman crossroads and from there to Taj Skyline. The other alternative for vehicles to go from the city’s interiors to the outskirts is going from Zazarman crossroads to Baghban crossroads, then to Ambli overbridge and finally turning towards Shilaj Circle.

Action plan

According to Sector-1 Ahmedabad Additional Commissioner of Police, Nirajkumar Badgujar, even though a prohibition drive is underway across the city, police will also take action against listed bootleggers. Further, checkpoints will also be placed at all the entrances to the city, said the police notification. An intensified vehicle checking drive will also be carried out to keep a tab on smuggling of liquor and narcotics, said the notification.

The Ahmedabad City Police will also provide 300 breath analysers to the officials deployed to catch the people who are drinking and driving. Police teams will also be deployed especially at CG Road, SG Highway, Sidhu Bhavan Road, and the Sabarmati Riverfront, where maximum local residents are expected to gather, according to the notification.

Meanwhile, the police also held a meeting with the hotel owners and party organisers, warning them against use of drugs and alcohol on premises. Care has been taken to make sure no communal incidents take place, said the notification. “Police will also be deployed on all major roads to make sure there are no miscreants racing or performing stunts putting lives of citizens in danger,” stated the notification.

According to the officials, “SHE teams will be deployed in plainclothes for women’s security and they will conduct surveillance and monitoring of hotspots. Strict action will be taken to address harassment and drunken revelry,” said DCP Ajit Rajian in a statement on Monday.

Traffic prohibition

Only passenger vehicles will be allowed on SG Highway between 8 am on December 31, 2024, and 3 am on January 1, 2025, according to the notification. All other vehicles can use SP Ring Road. No vehicle parking will be allowed on SG Highway stretch between Pakwan crossroads and Sanand Chowkdi between 7 pm on December 31, 2024, and 3 am on January 1, 2025.

Luxury buses cannot be parked anywhere between Nehrunagar Circle to Shivranjani crossroads till Iskcon crossroads. They can use the parallel lane. They can use parallel roads during this prohibited period between 10 pm on December 31, 2024, and 3 am on January 1, 2025, stated the notification.
