Afghan national assaulted, called ‘terrorist’ in Nagpur; three booked

An Afghan national was allegedly assaulted and subjected to communal abuse late Sunday night in Yadav Nagar Sweeper Colony area of Nagpur. According to an FIR filed at the Yashodhara police station in Nagpur, the incident, which took place around 11.45 pm on July 27, involved physical assault, threats and damage to property. The Nagpur police have registered a case under different sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

The complainant, Fahim Khan Mohammad Mamatul Mard, a 46-year-old cloth merchant and resident of Sartaj Colony in Bada Tajbagh, had gone to Yadav Nagar along with his friend Namasmeer Khan to inspect a used refrigerator for purchase. However, what was intended to be a casual visit turned violent.

According to the police complaint, as the two men were leaving after his friend finalised the sale of a refrigerator, one of the accused, Ajay Suraj Chavan (26), approached Fahim and allegedly said, “You are a terrorist. Why have you come here?” before launching into an assault. When Fahim asked what the issue was, Ajay allegedly began beating him with his fists.

The situation escalated when Ajay was joined by two others, Rishi Prakash Tambe (20) and a juvenile, who arrived on a motorcycle and also began hitting Fahim and his friend. Amid the assault, Ajay allegedly picked up a cement paver block and struck Fahim multiple times on the head and chest, while shouting threats to kill him.

As the complainant and his companion tried to leave the scene, the accused allegedly blocked their way and warned them against reporting the incident to police. They also reportedly hurled stones at Fahim’s car, breaking its windows.

The case was registered the next morning on Monday under relevant sections of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Police officials confirmed that all three accused are residents of Yadav Nagar Sweeper Colony and that appropriate legal action is being taken. The involvement of a minor has also been noted, and further steps under the Juvenile Justice Act are expected. All the accused in the case have been arrested, said Yashodhara Nagar police.
