ONE OF India’s leading actors, Kareena Kapoor Khan has achieved much success and critical acclaim in a career spanning over two decades. After making her much-anticipated debut with Refugee (2000), Kareena essayed some of the most popular characters of Indian cinema. This month, she is set to make her streaming debut with the Sujoy Ghosh-directed thriller Jaane Jaan. The film, an official adaptation of the bestselling novel Devotion of Suspect X by Keigo Higashino, will release on Netflix on September 21. Kareena will be the chief guest at the Express Adda in Mumbai on Monday.
Granddaughter of legendary filmmaker Raj Kapoor, and younger daughter of actors Randhir Kapoor and Babita, Kareena has witnessed many changes that the film industry has undergone over the years. The actor, who is also regarded as an influential fashionista, has been an active participant in these changes as she has taken on movies of various genres and played a wide range of characters. Kareena, who made ‘Size Zero’ a buzzword and is a sought-after showstopper at fashion shows, has also been an advocate of positive body image.
Early on in her career, she dabbled with both mainstream and off-beat cinema with ease. In 2001, she captured movie-goer’s attention as the spoilt and spirited Poo in Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham as well as a warrior princess in Ashoka (2001).
Over the years, she has been part of several ambitious mainstream projects such as 3 Idiots (2009), Ra.One (2011), Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015) and Laal Singh Chaddha (2022). She has also essayed key characters in critically-acclaimed movies such as Omkara (2006), Talaash (2012) and Udta Punjab (2016).
However, it’s her portrayal of the vivacious Geet in Jab We Met (2007) that has had an enduring appeal. Kareena, who is known for her comic timing, has also contributed to the success of entertainers such as Golmaal Returns (2008) and Good Newwz (2019).
In recent years, she has been actively backing woman-oriented narratives such as Veere Di Wedding (2018). After Jaane Jaan, she will headline another such project — Hansal Mehta’s The Buckingham Murders, which will premiere at the 67th BFI London Film Festival. One of her much-talked about upcoming projects is The Crew, which also features Tabu and Kriti Sanon.
Married to actor Saif Ali Khan and mother to Taimur, 6, and Jeh, 2, she has cast the spotlight on a range of issues pertaining to urban and working women as the host of a popular radio show, What Women Want. She also talks about body positivity, societal bias and parenting on this show. She is the author of the book Pregnancy Bible.
