7 arrested in Chhattisgarh after video shows them stripping & flogging Dalit man

The police have identified the arrested people as the teenage girl’s father, brother, his friend and three uncles.

Seven people were arrested Friday for stripping naked and flogging a Dalit man in Chhattisgarh’s Sakti district, police said.

According to the police, a video showed a 21-year-old Dalit man being beaten up for allegedly being in a relationship with a minor, who belongs to an OBC caste group. The incident allegedly occurred in the early hours of April 9.

Police claimed the couple’s relationship is believed to have enraged her family.

The man sustained injuries on his left eye and body and is currently being treated at the local hospital, police said. While the family did not file a police complaint, the viral video prompted the police to take suo motu cognizance, Sakti Superintendent of Police Ankita Sharma said.

The police have identified the arrested people as the teenage girl’s father, brother, his friend and three uncles. All seven have been booked for attempted murder, rioting and criminal intimidation among other sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and provisions of the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989.
