2017-2021: 63% of those who cleared UPSC Mains were from engg stream

Out of the various mediums of writing of the recommended candidates, the top five were Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi and Kannada.

Of the 4,371 candidates recommended in the Civil Services (main) examination from 2017-2021, 2,783 or 63% belonged to the engineering stream, according to Government data tabled in the Rajya Sabha Thursday.

Around 1,033 or 23% of the candidates who cleared the UPSC Mains were from the humanities stream, 315 had science background, and 240 candidates were from the medical science stream. There were 3,337 with Bachelor’s degrees and 1,034 with a higher qualification, the data showed.

According to the data, 75% of the candidates recommended in the exam were men and 25% women. Out of the various mediums of writing of the recommended candidates, the top five were Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi and Kannada.

Political science and international relations topped the list of optional subjects chosen by these candidates in 2021, 2020 and 2019. In 2018 and 2017, the top optional subjects were sociology and geography, respectively.
