A 20-year-old student at the Goa campus of BITS Pilani was found dead in his hostel room on Tuesday in what police suspect to be a case of suicide. Police said they were investigating the matter and that the reason for the suspected suicide was yet to be ascertained. The postmortem was conducted Thursday. The student was pursuing BE Computer Science and MSc Physics. His parents, from Ghaziabad and based in Delhi, have arrived in Goa, police said. According to police, the student had an exam scheduled for Tuesday, but he did not appear for it. “In the evening, when some students went looking for him, his hostel room was found locked from inside. The college authorities then informed the police. A police team forced open the door. No suicide note has been recovered,” a police officer said. The incident was reported to police at 5.51 pm on Tuesday. A statement by the institution said, “BITS Pilani, K K Birla Goa Campus, is engulfed in a shadow of grief and lament at the loss of a precious life in the form of a young talent with immense potential to excel in life… A bright dual degree (M.Sc Physics; B.E Computer Science) student of 20 years of age is no more.” “The institute awaits police investigation as to the cause of his death. The institute stands in solidarity with the bereaved parents and family members, his distraught friends and teachers and staff members. It is finding hard to come to terms with this irreparable loss,” the statement added. Last month, a second-year BTech student of IIT Goa had died by suicide in her hostel room.
