1984 riots: Tytler appears before CBI to give voice sample

Speaking to reporters, Tytler said, "What have I done? If there's evidence against me, then I'm prepared to hang myself... It wasn't related to the 1984 riots case for which they wanted my voice (sample), but another case."

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Tuesday summoned former Congress MP Jagdish Tytler in a case connected to the 1984 anti-Sikh riots in Pul Bangash area, where three persons were allegedly killed by a mob, and recorded his voice sample at the central forensic science laboratory (CFSL).

Source said the investigation officer has summoned politician Manjit Singh GK, who had released an alleged sting tape in which a person purported to be Tytler was claiming to have killed the Sikhs.

The agency, which has filed three closure reports so far, made the move after fresh evidence surfaced. It has been decided to take voice samples only to compare the voice sample of Tytler with that in the video, officials said. “On Tuesday morning, Tytler arrived at the CFSL in the CGO complex where his voice sample was collected by experts,” an official said. Earlier, when Tytler was questioned by the CBI, he denied any role in the riots.

Speaking to the media, Tytler claimed that the summons were not related to the 1984 riots case. “What have I done? If there’s evidence against me, I am prepared to hang myself… It wasn’t related to the riots case for which they wanted my voice (sample), but another case,” he said after the procedure.

The case pertains to riots at Gurdwara Pul Bangash in North Delhi, where three people were killed on November 1, 1984, a day after the assassination of then prime minister Indira Gandhi. The families of the victims had filed a protest petition challenging the CBI’s closure reports in the case. The CBI re-investigated the killings near the gurdwara after a court in December 2007 refused to accept its closure report.
