12 injured in communal clash at UP’s Meerut, 1 arrested
A heavy police deployment has been made in the Tatina village in Meerut after the violence on Saturday night.

Twelve people, including a pregnant woman, were injured in a communal clash in Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut district on Saturday night. After the clash at Tatina village, the police arrested one man, began raids to arrest other culprits, and lodged an FIR at the Lohia Nagar police station.
The police said Sirajuddin Qureshi, 28, a resident of Hapur district, has been living with his in-laws in Tatina village for the last three months. Around 10 pm on Saturday, Qureshi, who was in an inebriated state, got into an altercation with Wahid Ahmed, 30, of the same village over an issue while returning home.
While both were fighting, a local doctor, Sitaram, 62, was on his way home in Tatina village from his clinic when he tried to intervene. The doctor’s intervention irritated both fighters, who then allegedly jointly attacked Sitaram. Sensing trouble, local residents rushed to shield the doctor. By that time, around a dozen people from Sirajuddin’s family had rushed to rescue him, said the police.
The area quickly turned into a battleground as Hindus and Muslims allegedly threw bricks at each other and attacked with sharp weapons, resulting in injuries to around a dozen people, including Sonam, 26, a pregnant who had reportedly rushed to the scene to save her husband Harish, 34.
Meanwhile, Dr Sitaram’s grandson Vipul informed Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal leaders about the incident. Soon, 30 to 40 members of the two Hindu outfits rushed to the spot and later staged a dharna at Lohia Nagar police station, demanding the immediate arrest of the culprits.
“We have arrested Qureshi and raids are being conducted to nab others. The forces from three police stations — Lohia Nagar, Brahmpuri and Lisadi Gate — were requisitioned to quell the trouble. The injured have been admitted to the district hospital while adequate police and personnel from the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) have been deployed in the Tatina village as a precautionary measure,” said Sanjay Pandey, the Station House Officer (SHO) of the Lohia Nagar police station.
