Netflix’s Unknown Number: The High School Catfish is a new Netflix documentary that tells a shocking true story of cyberbullying and family betrayal in the small town of Beal City, Michigan. In October 2020, 13-year-old Lauryn Licari and her boyfriend Owen McKenney began receiving strange and abusive text messages from an unknown number. After two years of harassment, trauma, and intense investigation involving both families, the police revealed the culprit: Lauryn’s own mother, Kendra. When confronted, she had to confess the truth to her daughter and husband, an emotional moment captured on body camera and shown in the documentary. Here’s the aftermath, the motive, and where everyone involved in the case stands today.

What happened to Kendra Licari

Kendra Licari was arrested in December 2022 and charged with stalking and using a computer to commit a crime. She pleaded guilty to two counts of stalking a minor and was sentenced to 19 months to 5 years. She was released on August 8, 2024 and showed her willingness to be part of her daughter’s life. The documentary includes Kendra’s own interview, a last-minute decision. According to director Skye Borgman, much of the film had already been shot, but it took time to get her to agree. She ultimately wanted to share her side and let Lauryn see her perspective. “She’s remorseful that she has severely altered her relationship with her daughter in most likely a negative way,” Borgamna told tudum.  “I mean, will they have a relationship? Will they get through this? I don’t know. There will probably be some kind of relationship. Will it be the same? Absolutely not. There’s no way it can be the same.”

Why did Kendra do this? The documentary tries to find an answer. Kendra claimed her actions were influenced by her own traumatic experiences as a child. Borgman revealed, “She talks about how scary that was for her to see her only child, her little girl, growing up, and that’s what she really relates to.” According to her, she feared losing Lauryn and wanted to stay close, despite accepting that her methods were cruel and traumatising. Some compared it to Munchausen by proxy, where a parent harms a child to maintain control, but Borgman said this isn’t a medical diagnosis and should be understood more as behavioir patterns rather than a clinical condition.

What happened to Lauryn Licari after her mom’s arrest

For Lauryn, the events and the ultimate revelation were both shocking and heartbreaking. No child could have imagined her own mother harassing her. After Kendra’s release from prison, Lauryn began processing the past and is now trying to take full control of her life. She is 18 now. The film also shows Lauryn rebuilding her bond with her father, Shawn, while figuring out her relationship with her mother. Borgman revealed that when they first met Lauryn in 2023, she was a kid who still loved her mother and wanted her back in her life despite everything. However, when the filmmakers returned a year later, after Kendra’s release, they noticed a change of heart. Borgman says, “Lauryn got the most complicated feelings to deal with. Everybody else can hate Kendra. I don’t think Lauryn can, right? It’s your mom. I mean, how do you navigate that? It’s really uncharted waters.”

As for Owen, the documentary showed that the two broke up before the case reached a verdict. By the time filming wrapped, they were no longer in touch. “I see him in the hallways and stuff, but we don’t really have interactions at all,” Lauryn revealed in a recent interview with The Cut. Owne said, “I was mad at Lauryn. I don’t think I will talk to her in the future.” The film also highlights what happened to others involved in the investigation, including Khloe Wilson, Owen’s friend, who faced suspicion and lost friends due to the false leads. Borgman praised these students for sharing their experiences: “They wanted to do their part to make the world a better place, and I just take off my hat to these kids because they’re willing to do hard stuff to put their story out there and to try to help other kids that might be dealing with something like this.”
