Nayanthara’s open letter to Dhanush over his Rs 10 crore lawsuit against her has sparked a heated conversation among their fans on social media. Dhanush sued Nayanthara for allegedly using a behind-the-scenes clip from their film Naanum Rowdy Dhaan in her upcoming Netflix documentary, Nayanthara: Beyond The Fairy Tale.

Now, an old video of Nayanthara apologising to Dhanush during the 2016 Filmfare Awards is being circulated on social media. In the clip, she said that Dhanush “hated” her performance in the film and promised to improve.

In the resurfaced video, Nayanthara is seen expressing gratitude for winning the Best Actress Award for Naanum Rowdy Dhaan. While thanking the film’s cast and crew, she addressed Dhanush’s criticism directly. She said, “Thank you Filmfare for the most prestigious black lady. Like everyone else, I have a long list of thank yous, but I will keep it short. First of all, thank you to all my fans for being supportive through my lows and highs. They’ve always believed in me. Thank you Vijay Sethupathi Sir, the entire cast and crew, cameraman George and Sreekar sir.”

She added, “Thank you Dhanush for initiating NRD and I have to say I am sorry also. Dhanush absolutely hated my performance in Naanum Rowdy Dhaan. Sorry Dhanush for disappointing you with my performance. I’ll probably make it better next time.”

Naanum Rowdy Dhaan, which starred Nayanthara and Vijay Sethupathi in lead roles, was a major success, earning critical acclaim and box-office success. It was produced by Dhanush and directed by Vignesh Shivan, who is now married to Nayanthara.

The Open Letter

On Saturday, Nayanthara penned an open letter on Instagram, alleging that she had spent two years trying to obtain Dhanush’s permission to use footage from the film in her upcoming Netflix documentary, Nayanthara: Beyond The Fairy Tale. After failing to secure a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from him, she and her team decided to forgo the official footage and instead used a behind-the-scenes clip from the film’s shoot, which had been recorded on their personal devices.

Nayanthara expressed shock at Dhanush’s legal action following the documentary’s trailer release. “What’s even more shocking is your legal notice after the release of the trailer of the Netflix Documentary. We were startled to read those lines wherein you questioned the usage of some videos (just 3 seconds) which were shot in our personal devices and that too BTS visuals that are already very much publicly present on social media and claimed a sum of Rs 10 crores as damages for the mere 3 seconds. This is an all time low from you and speaks so much about your character. I wish you were half the person you portray to be on stage in audio launches in front of your innocent fans but clearly you do not practice what you preach. at least not for me and my partner,” she wrote.

A Legal Response

Nayanthara accused Dhanush of being ‘vile’ in her open letter, also highlighting how his harsh criticism of her performance in Naanum Rowdy Dhaan left a lasting scar. She alleged that Dhanush harboured grudges, writing, “I learnt through film circles that your ego was supremely hurt after the film became a blockbuster.” Concluding her statement, Nayanthara addressed his legal notice, asserting her intent to take appropriate action. “I am in receipt of your legal notice, and we shall respond to it befittingly through lawful means,” she stated.
