When Beast was released, it was trolled to the extent that there were speculations that claimed that director Nelson Dilipkumar was removed from Jailer (which was yet to be titled back then). However, Rajinikanth, after having a meeting with Sun Pictures and the director, chose to stick with Nelson. And that has paid off. Jailer has turned out to be a massive hit earning about Rs 222 crore at the box office in a matter of four days. Finally, Nelson, who has been avoiding interviews, has started to open up, and he has revealed Vijay’s reaction after Beast’s failure.
In a recent interview with Galatta, Nelson was asked about how Vijay reacted after Beast’s release. “We keep talking. To be frank, when the film was released, he told ‘We made a film. You made what you told me you will. We put in our best effort. Some liked it, and some didn’t. We can’t do anything about it now. Let’s try doing something better next time.'”
He added, “I then asked him if he is upset with me. He looked perplexed and asked ‘Why would I be pissed with you?’ I told him because the film is only getting a mixed response. He said ‘Yov (Arre)’ and left. He then came back and asked ‘So, our friendship is nothing more than a film, is it? You have hurt me by asking this.'”
Vijay and Nelson are always in touch, and the Tamil star has wished him the success of Jailer. Nelson said, “He texted me saying he is happy about the success. That’s how we are. People keep saying a lot of things. It is better not to respond to all of that.”
Nelson also shared his experience of working with superstar Rajinikanth. “He is very sharp. People don’t know that. He is very stable and balanced. You all say I am stable. I can’t match him. Imagine the things he would have seen in his life. At 72, when I watch him in the theatre, I forgot I made the film and got engrossed in him… it’s magic. You need high intelligence for it and you also need to know the reality.”
