It took 36 years for celebrated filmmaker Mani Ratnam and actor Kamal Haasan to reunite for a project after their first collaboration in Nayakan. The duo officially announced their upcoming film, Thug Life, on Ratnam’s birthday in November 2023. At the CNN-News18 Indian of the Year award event on Wednesday, the ace director explained the reason behind the delay.
Ratnam revealed that the extended hiatus was not due to any discord but rather a lack of a suitable script.
He said, “It’s tough when you have an actor of that capability, someone who has done several things. So unless you have at least something halfway solid to give, you don’t go to him just because you’ve worked together before. Hopefully, we will now be able to bring a unique character on-screen in our next.”
Meanwhile, Raaj Kamal Films International, the production house behind Thug Life, recently welcomed actors Aishwarya Lekshmi, Joju George and Gautam Karthik to the film’s team. Take a look:
The movie’s teaser was released in November 2023. In the teaser, Kamal says, “My name is Rengaraya Sakthivel Nayakan.” The teaser features intense moments, showcasing a gang racing towards him with lethal weapons. He further says, “Kayalpattu Kaaran. The moment I was born, they decided my fate that I was a criminal… gonda… Yakuza. In Japanese, Yakuza means gangster.”
Besides Thug Life, Kamal Haasan has a plethora of films lined up. He has Indian 2,: Nag Ashwin’s Kalki 2898AD and H Vinoth’s KH233 in the pipeline.
