Hours after the 2025 Oscars ceremony wrapped up, a 3.9 magnitude earthquake hit Los Angeles. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries, reported BBC.

It wouldn’t be the Oscars without at least some controversy, right? While this year’s ceremony was relatively smooth, the “In Memoriam” segment drew criticism for leaving out Buffy the Vampire Slayer actress Michelle Trachtenberg and Darkness of Man star Shannen Doherty. Other notable names missing from the tribute included Tony Todd, Chance Perdomo, Alain Delon, Annie Hall actor Tony Roberts, Linda Lavin, James Darren, Mitzi Gaynor, Martin Mull, and Romeo and Juliet star Olivia Hussey, as well as documentary filmmaker Morgan Spurlock, Variety reported.

In a major triumph, No Other Land, a documentary highlighting Israel's displacement of a Palestinian community, won the Best Documentary Feature trophy at the 97th Academy Awards on Monday. Directed by Basel Adra, Hamdan Ballal, Yuval Abraham, and Rachel Szor the film depicts Israeli soldiers demolishing homes and forcibly removing residents to establish a military training zone, as well as the encroachment of Jewish settlers on the Palestinian community.

"'No Other Land' reflects the harsh reality that we have been enduring for decades and still resist as we call on the world to take serious actions to stop the injustice and to stop the ethnic cleansing of the Palestinian people," Adra said during his acceptance speech.

"We made this film, Palestinians and Israelis, because together our voices are stronger. We see each other, the atrocious destruction of Gaza and its people which must end, the Israeli hostages brutally taken in the crime of October 7, which must be freed. When I look at Basel, I see my brother but we are unequal. We live in a regime where I am free under civilian law and Basel is under military law that destroys his life and he cannot control," Abraham noted.

"There is a different path. A political solution without ethnic supremacy, with national rights for both of our people. And I have to say as I'm here, the foreign policy in this country is helping to block this path. And why? Can't you see that we are intertwined? That my people can be truly safe if Basel's people are truly free and safe. There is another way. It's not too late for life, for the living," he added.

Opening up about his Oscar win, director Walter Salles, whose I'm Still Here bagged the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film, said: "I think it's not a film that has been recognised; it's a culture that's being recognised. It's the way we do cinema in Brazil that is being recognised." Speaking to reporters following the win, Salles shared that democracy was becoming more fragile around the world. "I never thought it would be so fragile in this country," he said, referring to the US. "And therefore what happened in Brazil in the past feels very close to our present."

After winning her first-ever Oscar, 25-year-old Anora star Mikey Madison described her Best Actress victory as "surreal." Taking the stage, she expressed her gratitude and reaffirmed her support for the sex worker community. "I want to again recognise the sex worker community. I will continue to support and be an ally," Madison said. "I grew up in Los Angeles but Hollywood always felt so far away from me. This is a dream come true. I’m probably going to wake up tomorrow."

In his acceptance speech, Best Actor winner Adrien Brody reflected on his journey and touched on issues beyond cinema. "It looks very glamorous and in certain moments it is," he shared. "But the one thing that I’ve gained, having the privilege to come back here, is to have some perspective. No matter where you are in your career, no matter what you’ve accomplished, it can all go away. And I think what makes this night so special is the awareness of that."

Brody also spoke out against antisemitism and racism, noting: "I’m here once again to represent the lingering traumas and the repercussions of war and systematic oppression and of antisemitism and racism and othering. I pray for a healthier and a happier and a more inclusive world. And I believe if the past can teach us anything, it’s a reminder to not let hate go unchecked."

In the most significant win of the 97th Academy Awards, director Sean Baker’s romantic comedy-drama Anora took home the Oscar for Best Picture, securing its fifth award and making it the most celebrated film of the event. Notably, Anora won in five of the six categories it was nominated for. The Best Picture award was presented to the film’s makers by When Harry Met Sally stars Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal.

Marking the film’s fourth Oscar victory, Mikey Madison earned the Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role for her performance in Anora. The trophy was presented by Emma Stone.

With his third Oscar win, Sean Baker took home the Academy Award for Best Director for his romantic comedy-drama Anora. Earlier in the day, the film had also won Oscars for Best Film Editing and Best Original Screenplay. In his acceptance speech, Baker urged fellow filmmakers to continue making movies for the big screen and urged industry stakeholders to support the survival of theatres. He also shared that his mother introduced him to cinema at the age of five and took a moment to wish her a happy birthday, as the ceremony coincided with her special day. The award was presented by acclaimed filmmaker Quentin Tarantino.

In one of the biggest wins of the event today, actor Adrien Brody won the Oscar for Best Actor in a Leading Role for his performance as László Tóth in director Brady Corbet's The Brutalist. He secured the award in a highly competitive category, surpassing fellow nominees Timothée Chalamet (A Complete Unknown), Colman Domingo (Sing Sing), Ralph Fiennes (Conclave) and Sebastian Stan (The Apprentice). This marks Brody’s second Academy Award, following his first win for The Pianist (2002). The trophy was presented to him by last year’s Best Actor winner Cillian Murphy.

In a heartfelt tribute, actor-comedian Whoopi Goldberg and host-television producer Oprah Winfrey honoured record producer and composer Quincy Jones. As part of the tribute, rapper and singer Queen Latifah performed the track "Ease on Down the Road", produced by Jones.

In his first-ever Oscar victory, composer-songwriter Daniel Blumberg won Best Music (Original Score) for his work on director Brady Corbet's The Brutalist. This marks the film's second award today, having earlier secured the trophy for Best Cinematography. The award was presented by legendary actor Mark Hamill.

In a significant achievement for director Walter Salles, his Brazilian political biographical drama I'm Still Here won the Best International Feature Film award at the 2025 Oscars. In his acceptance speech, Salles honoured lawyer and activist Eunice Paiva, whose life story inspired the film. He also dedicated the award to legendary actors Fernanda Torres and her mother, Fernanda Montenegro, who portrayed Paiva at different stages of her life. The "In Memoriam" segment at the 97th Academy Awards honoured several cinematic icons who passed away over the past year. It opened with Morgan Freeman paying tribute to legendary actor Gene Hackman, his co-star in films like Unforgiven (1992) and Under Suspicion (2000).

Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, were found deceased on the afternoon of February 26, 2025, by maintenance workers. They had been married since 1991 and led a private life.

In back-to-back wins, director Denis Villeneuve's epic film Dune: Part Two claimed victory in the Best Sound and Best Visual Effects categories. Starring Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin and Austin Butler, the film serves as the second instalment in a two-part adaptation of Frank Herbert's 1965 novel Dune.

In a commendable gesture, the 97th Academy Awards honoured the Los Angeles firefighters who fought the devastating Southern California wildfires in January 2025, which left a trail of destruction in the region. Host Conan allowed the firefighters to share three jokes, making them part of the event as well.

In her acceptance speech at the 97th Academy Awards, actor Zoe Saldaña, who won Best Supporting Actress for her role in Emilia Pérez, recalled her grandmother, who immigrated to the United States in 1961. She shared that her grandmother would have been proud to see her win for a role where she sings and speaks in Spanish. "I am a proud child of immigrant parents with dreams and dignity and hard-working hands," she said. Zoe also expressed gratitude to her husband "with that beautiful hair."

While No Other Land won the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature Film, The Only Girl in the Orchestra claimed the award for Best Documentary Short Film.

Despite earning 13 nominations, director Jacques Audiard's Emilia Pérez had been moving slowly at the 97th Academy Awards. However, Zoe Saldaña's win appears to have given the film momentum, as it has now secured its second award, winning Best Music (Original Song) for "El Mal", with Clément Ducol and Camille accepting the honour.

Marking its second win today, director Jon M Chu's musical fantasy Wicked claimed the Oscar for Best Production Design. Earlier in the ceremony, it also won Best Costume Design. The film stars Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande, Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater and Bowen Yang in key roles.

Actor Zoe Saldaña set Emilia Pérez's winning streak in motion at the 97th Academy Awards by winning the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. This marked her first-ever nomination. Director Jacques Audiard's musical crime comedy garnered a total of 13 nominations.

In another major win for Anora, Sean Baker secured the award for Best Film Editing, marking his second Oscar of the night. Among the early wins, director Gints Zilbalodis' Flow bagged the award for Best Animated Feature Film, triumphing over Inside Out 2, Memoir of a Snail, Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl and The Wild Robot. In one of the show's earliest wins, Kieran Culkin took home the award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance as Benji Kaplan in Jesse Eisenberg's A Real Pain. He triumphed over strong contenders, including Yura Borisov (Anora), Edward Norton (A Complete Unknown), Guy Pearce (The Brutalist) and Jeremy Strong (The Apprentice). The award was presented by Hollywood superstar Robert Downey Jr.
