King Khan Or His Wax Replica?

In 2011,the Badshah of Bollywood has gone from looking bad to worse. Is the burden of success exhausting him?

Shah Rukh Khan is light years away from Il Dolce Far Niente (an Italian phrase which means the art of doing nothing). “Two days of nothingness and I miss work already. I think my DNA is made up of working genes, relaxed loose fit genes don’t suit me,” he tweeted recently.

Loose fit genes and his favourite blue jeans now too loose to fit him —both are paradoxical truths of Khan’s life. In the last one year,he has begun to look middle-aged,tired,gaunt and sleep-deprived. That he is a hyperactive workaholic who hardly sleeps,is common knowledge. “He is constantly on the move and his level of activity is extremely high. Look at the way he promoted Ra.One and is now working on Don 2,it’s crazy,” says film PRO Monica Bhattacharya. Ra.One became the bane and boon of SRK’s existence. At Rs 140 crore, the film might have been the King’s dream, but its side-effects have been nightmarish. Not only has the frenzied pace of its promotions left him exhausted, its production drained him of his charm. A leaner, thinner, more bones than flesh Khan can now pass off as his wax replica.

His fans on the internet point out how his sudden weight loss, and dry, patchy smoker’s skin is making him age faster than the other Khans. On one of his stops during the eight-city tour to promote Ra.One,Khan himself confessed that,“he is exhausted as he’s been working round the clock.”

“I believe it’s just a phase,” says actor-director Deepa Sahi, who worked with him in Maya Memsaab. Otherwise, the actor has been on the ‘it roll’ since Om Shanti Om ,when he acquired those washboard abs. A romantic hero,Khan shed his chocolate hero DDLJ image to become the mature actor in films like Kabhie Alvida Na Kehna and Chak De India. When other heroes started flexing muscles and contemporaries such as Aamir and Salman Khan aimed for brawn,he too got six packs and fast. For his robotic, almost android-like look in Ra.One,followed by a menacing mafia face for Don 2,Khan stretched his work-out schedule and diet and dropped even more kilos.

The gaunt look may work for his character in Don 2 but,in real life,it makes him look hunted. Films are not the only reason he is so fatigued. His medical history is marked with injuries and major surgeries — fractured ribs, major spinal surgeries,a troubled right toe,a Medial Collateral Ligament (MCL) injury on the left knee,a bad twist to the left ankle,a severe rotator cuff injury in the left shoulder, and acute back pains. Khan has had more than his share of ailments.

“The pressure of owning a cricket team in IPL,travelling in different time zones, working without any break, hosting shows, managing teams, producing and acting,is bound to boomerang,” says celebrity trainer Leena Mogre.

She believes Khan needs a recuperative break. “He is a classic case of burn out,and he needs to choose — health or work,” she adds. But film critic Taran Adarsh does not agree. “As long as he is delivering the goods and the numbers,it’s all well,” he says. Perhaps Khan too believes that.
