Entire Indian cinema is in Mumbai for the first edition of World Audio Visual Entertainment Summit (WAVES) with the event kick starting on May 1. On the second day, the Government of India organised several sessions. Among them was one with actors Kareena Kapoor Khan and Vijay Deverakonda. The session was moderated by filmmaker-producer Karan Johar, who posed several South versus Bollywood questions to the stars.
During the conversation, while addressing the active debate around South cinema being superior to Bollywood, Karan Johar pointed towards Vijay Deverakonda and said, “I do believe Vijay, you come from a cinema which is truly majestic and that is of course a separate debate: Is South cinema superior to Hindi cinema. I think that divides us. We truly have to believe that it is Indian cinema. We are all Indian cinema. We are not North, we are not South, we are collectively making cinema what it is. I think that’s most important that we don’t divide. I always say this and I request Indian media that when you ask this, you are actually dividing us. And when you divide us, you break us.”
When asked how he deals with the South vs Bollywood debate, Vijay Deverakonda shared, “I think South-North debate can be interesting for headlines but not very productive for cinema. If we have to take on the giants of the world, we need to collaborate.”
He gave examples of two superstars of India, Shah Rukh Khan and Allu Arjun. He said, “Shah Rukh sir’s last film did a Rs 1000 crore film and then Allu Arjun’s film did Rs 1000 crore. So just imagine if you bring them together in one film. When you bring the two stars from India it will unite the country. The only ambition of any human is to get eyeballs and expand their reach. It is only possible through collaborations.”
While Kareena Kapoor expressed her excitement upon hearing this, Karan Johar quickly reminded the Geetha Govindam star about Jr NTR and Hrithik Roshan film. “War is happening with Jr NTR and Hrithik Roshan. And it is set to release on 15th of August. I think it is going to explode at the box office. It is not just branding or sequel, but look at the star power: Kiara Advani, Jr NTR, Hrithik Roshan, it is huge. So there are already these collaborations are happening”, said Karan Johar.
