Actor Manoj Bajpayee had done multiple roles prior to Gangs of Wasseypur that were well-received by the audience as well as critics. But it can be said that it was the Anurag Kashyap directorial that changed the trajectory of his career, by giving him another landmark role of Sardar Khan, after his unmatched success with Ram Gopal Varma’s Satya back in the day.
In a recent chat with Humans of Bombay, the actor opened up about how the project came to him via his old friend and collaborator, Anurag.
The actor then proceeded to reveal how he immediately said yes to the script post hearing Anurag’s narration.
“(Over the phone), Anurag said he has something to offer to me and would I like to read it. So he sent me his car, I went to his office, he read out the script to me. And I said, ‘Please order a red wine bottle.’ He ordered two bottles instead, we toasted and that is how Sardar Khan (his character from Gangs of Wasseypur) happened,” the actor added with a smile.
The 2012 release featured a plethora of actors, who are now familiar faces in the industry, including names such as Rajkummar Rao, Vineet Kumar Singh, Pankaj Mishra, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Huma Qureshi as well as Jaideep Ahlawat. Meanwhile, Manoj was last seen in the Disney Plus Hotstar movie Gulmohar, co-starring Sharmila Tagore and Simran.
