Before making his debut in Yash Raj Films’ Maharaj, Aamir Khan’s son Junaid Khan had auditioned for his father’s film, Laal Singh Chaddha, alongside his stepmother, Kiran Rao. In a recent interaction, Junaid revealed that both he and Kiran were tested to play a mother-son duo in the film. However, the movie’s massive budget prevented the makers from introducing a new face in the pivotal role.
Speaking to Vickey Lalwani on his YouTube channel, Junaid shared, “You would have seen me in Laal Singh Chaddha because I tested for it, along with Kiran Rao. She played my mother. We shot 7-8 scenes for the film over four days, amounting to about 20 minutes of footage. It was a test for me as well. Papa wanted to see how I dealt with the material. Ultimately, it didn’t work out, largely due to budget reasons. It was a very expensive film to put a new person in.” Aamir, who played the lead role in Laal Singh Chaddha, also co-produced the movie. The film was a remake of the 1994 American classic Forrest Gump, which starred Tom Hanks in the titular role.
Interestingly, Laal Singh Chaddha was not the only project Junaid Khan auditioned for. He also tested for the lead role in Kiran Rao’s directorial venture Laapataa Ladies. However, Kiran ultimately chose Sparsh Shrivastava over Junaid, believing the former was a better fit for the role. Elaborating on the decision, Junaid said, “Laapataa Ladies was a very different scenario. I did a screen test for the film, but Kiran just said, ‘Sparsh Shrivastava is better for the part,’ and I agree with her. He was better suited for the role.”
Despite not being cast, Junaid emphasised that the decision didn’t affect his relationship with Kiran. “Our equation is very good. She is a very fun and warm person, and we get along great,” he said. While Kiran directed Laapataa Ladies, Aamir Khan produced the film. Notably, Laapataa Ladies was India’s official entry to the Oscars this year, though it did not make it to the nominations list.
