Actor-turned-politician Jaya Prada has been sentenced to six months in jail and fined Rs 5,000 for a case dating back several years. It was alleged that she did not pay Employee State Insurance (ESI) funds to her theatre workers. Jaya Prada, who has acted in both Telugu and Bollywood films, has a career spanning three decades with appearances in over 300 movies.
According to a report by India Today, Jayaprada’s brother Raja Babu and her business colleague Ram Kumar were also held guilty. The second metropolitan magistrate court in Egmore held them guilty of failing to comply with the statutory obligations of payment of contributions due to the ESI corporation. The ESI cited that they broke the law by not making contributions under The Employees State Insurance Act, leading to charges against them.
Their theatre has been closed for over 10 years. The workers alleged that although the management deducted ESI contributions, they did not transfer the funds to the state insurance corporation. The ESI corporation lodged a complaint against Jaya Prada and her brother for neglecting to pay Rs 8,17,794 from November 1991 to September 2002. The court ordered them to pay the due amount.
Director K Vishwanath launched Jaya Prada in Hindi cinema with Kaamchor. She acted alongside stars such as Amitabh Bachchan and Sridevi. In 1994, she joined the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) after being invited by its founder NT Rama Rao. The actor joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2019. She has acted in several films, including Mera Faisla, Sharaabi, Maqsad, Naya Kadam, Haisiyat, and Awaaz.
